ultra systems & performance

hello fellow mammals!

i recently upgraded my box to get it quakewars ready :p
my current specs are:

e6600 (running at 2.4 currently)
evga 8800 ultra
2gb ram
windows xp (cant wait for the linux client to be released)
soundblaster live! (pci)
intel e1000 (pci-e)
abit p5b mobo
2048/384 line

one should think this is more than enough to run quakewars...however i am still facing FPS issues (massive drops) which i am tracking on a daily basis and already improved alot.

i play on 1600x1200 (ultra/high) but it doesnt matter if going up/down in resolution. fps remain the same.
with com_unlock_timingmethod 0 i have best results, having >120 fps outside and >220 fps inside buildings.
however on some parts of the map or when lots of player arrive (on full servers) frames drop down to 30-60 fps. meanwhile i am convinved those are NOT related to the CPU or GFX card but point to some network stack issue.

when i increased the net_client_maxrate to above the default insane low setting, these frame drops decreased (the amount/duration of it).

with the adjusted client_maxrate i can play with > 90-120 fps *all* the time on servers up to 16 players. with 24 players however, i still face massive fps drops.
this issue is really hard to track because it seems also to be related on *which* server you play on. for example, yesterday i got steady fps on a 16 player quakewars.league server while on the default named ones with the same player amount i got jumpy fps.

these netcode issues *need* to be addressed, the game is SO AWESOME on a ultra system when running totally smooth... but its *VERY* frustrating if you own a 8800 ultra and high end stuff ...and play with jumpy fps like its a 2 year old box.

once i get home i will dump all settings from my config which *did* actually affect performance in a measureable way.

however if you never tried com_unlock_timingmethod 0 ...do it now :p

until soon

mammals sux badly, and not just because its lies in their nature :p

Fearog of SplashDamage has written some explanation about the timingmethod thingy which can be found here

I have about the same system and also have FPS drops but not that big.

Thanks for the info. Let's hope this will all be improved in the Demo and retail build though :)
